Winning at Pub Quizzes

I have been organizing pub quizzes for fifteen years and now I run a pub quiz in Girona, Catalonia, Spain, for Catalans with a certain level of English and native speakers. What follows are five ways to win, or at least give your team a better chance of winning, in a pub quiz.

1. The right size

The optimal size of the pub quiz team is four people. Whatever the anthropological evidence in the pudding, the dynamics of a good pub quiz team and even a not-so-great pub quiz team are better with four people. A team of three doesn’t have the breadth of knowledge needed to win, and a team of five seems to be more likely to argue. Of course, there are plenty of not-so-great pub four-quiz teams that don’t have the knowledge and argue, but more on that later.

Having decided on the size of the Pub Quiz team, we can look at the other four factors in a good Pub Quiz team.

2. Dissemination of knowledge

There needs to be a good spread of knowledge in the team if it’s going to work well. Four people who know a lot about football and nothing else will not give the team a good score on a general knowledge quiz in a pub, and a quiz in a pub only on football reduces the customer base. Naturally, there will be some specialization among team members, but a wide spread of knowledge throughout the team is the best starting point for becoming a competitive team. So why not have three people instead of four? You can have three people, it’s just that you won’t have a wide spread of knowledge like you have with four.

3. The Fourth Person

The fourth person often feels like they don’t contribute to the team. I never know the answer to any of the questions. they can complain regularly. But this is because they only remember having provided three answers out of, let’s say, forty. The important thing with the fourth person, the one who provides the fewest answers, is not how many questions he answers, but what questions he answers. If they answer three questions that no one else on the team could answer, and the team wins by two points, then their contribution has been vital to the team. This person’s contribution is usually similar to that of characters in daytime soap operas, rather than the number of moons Jupiter has, but those questions are asked on a Pub Quiz, and a correct answer gets the same number of points as answer correctly which scientist. gives its name to the uncertainty principle.

4. Who gets the pen?

An important decision to make is who has the pen. The person with the pen should listen to other people’s opinions. They must be able to clearly put options before the team and write down what the response considered by the team is. This all takes about fifteen seconds, so you have to be natural to do it. The least likely person to hold the pen is someone who knows everything and writes their usually wrong answer before there’s any debate about it. Then, when the answer given by the quiz teacher is different, there will be no apology from you, but rather an ‘oh yeah, I meant that’ response. They will learn nothing from the experience, and the same will happen again if they have the pen. It can be argued that this person shouldn’t be on the team in the first place, but properly monitoring his knowledge base – he may be an electrical engineer or something, he could be useful to the team. After all, let’s remember that it is sometimes difficult to gather four people in a team, and most of the friends are seriously flawed, otherwise why would they be friends?

5. The first answer is the best answer

The first answer to a pub quiz question is usually the correct answer. Having written an answer, it should not be changed unless you know it is the wrong answer and have found a better and more informed answer, or are sure you have the correct answer. There’s nothing more annoying than crossing out your first answer and replacing it, only to find out that the first answer you wrote was the correct one.
