Speed Development in Youth Football – A Few Qucik Tips For Developing Speed

For the second year in a row, my youth soccer program is running an abbreviated “soccer speed” development program in the spring. The program is designed to develop enthusiasm for playing our program while working on developing “soccer speed” and form.
The program is called FASTT for Fun, Agility, Speed and Technique Training. The program is divided into three segments, the first segment is the “football speed” development part. Here we work on developing form, speed and quickness using modern plyometric movements integrated into the movements of soccer. We use a combination of bodyweight, ladder, cone, medicine ball, box jumps, and harness in this part of the program.
Fundamental Skills Development
The second segment focuses on the development of fundamental basic soccer technique. We do not use pads for this. We focus on breaking down each fundamental soccer move into teachable steps, and then we refine those steps. We don’t work our football schemes or plays, this is all fundamental skill development and the drills and skills change daily.
Game time
The final segment is the pure fun competitive team gaming portion. Many of these team building games have little or nothing to do with soccer. What they do for children is help them develop a bond with each other and help them develop a keen sense of competition while having lots of fun.
This is not conditioning, it is a process that helps build momentum and enthusiasm in our youth soccer program. It also shows players and parents how we work with children and gives children an understanding of our expectations and methods of communication. This certainly helps us in August when many teams are struggling with their first practices, we can quickly move into assessments, teach the fundamentals and set up outlines.
Teams Next Seasons
As I mentioned in the past, we are expanding our program to 4 teams, one age
6-7 flag team, 7-9 year old tackle team, 10-11 year old tackle and 12-13 year old tackle. I will be head coaching all 3 tackle teams next season after having head coached 2 of the teams last year. The reason I have all 3 teams is because the parents want it that way and I’m putting together 3 head coaches that I want to work closely with me for a season before handing them a team. While several of these future head coaches have excellent credentials, there is so much more to youth soccer than X and O. In
Omaha when I expanded from 1 team to 16 teams in 5 short years, we didn’t take the time to do the hands-on learning program and we outgrew our infrastructure. We now have a Head Coach Development Program that will prepare each one to be an effective youth soccer coach.
FAST during the summer
The FASST program is 7 weeks long and started on April 1st, we meet once a week for just 90 minutes. We want to keep the very hungry kids in touch with us and many are also playing baseball. We leave each player with a written summer development program that they can use if they choose. We showed parents what we’re looking for in the movements in a group presentation in May and left them with a written training plan. I tell parents that I don’t care if Junior does any of the moves over the summer, but rather let the kids be kids and make sure they get plenty of time in the heat. On the other hand, we have some kids who are very tough and if they want to do something on their own over the summer, we give them the tools to do it.
Doing a “speed camp” or activity like FASST has helped set us apart from other youth soccer programs in the area and gives us a nice transition into the fall. Our league rules do not restrict this type of activity in any way, so be sure to review your league rules before you begin.
