The Karate Secret No One Wants You To Know

Have you seen the new Human Weapon show on the History Channel? It’s pretty good.

The concept is that these two athletic guys (one an MMA fighter, the other a former soccer player and wrestler) travel the world to train and then try out the martial arts of various cultures. And though it has only aired two episodes as of this writing, the show has already proven to be a highly revealing diagnostic tool for those who can look past the romanticism and isolate the truth. Let me explain…

Last week’s episode was about Karate. And not the kids’ Karate nonsense you see on the street corner. No, the Human Weapon guys traveled directly to Okinawa (the birthplace of Karate) to train with three of the best, toughest and most respected teachers in the world.

The show showcased amazing feats of human strength, discipline, conditioning, and training. And the Okinawan Senseis were absolutely amazing to watch, and even learn from through the miracle of television. In other words; It was pretty cool. But the reason I really loved the show was that while it respected the individual practitioner, it wasn’t afraid to provide an unbiased and accurate history of the art (as was I).

Karate is a peasant art of farmers. Learned from the Chinese and combined with their own cultural fighting art of “Te”, Okinawans did not change the name from “Kudo Te” (Chinese hand) to Karate (empty hand) until they adopted the Japanese language after the occupation. Did you catch that? OCCUPATION. (That means they were conquered)

Karate did not stop the Japanese samurai from entering and occupying the island, nor was there any successful peasant revolt to overthrow the samurai. Sure, there were some famous and isolated cases of karate guys successfully holding their own against an armed samurai, and karate training is no doubt grueling (by the way, I have a black belt in Goju Ryu Karate), but the facts are the truth. facts… .Okinawa, once an independent kingdom, is now part of Japan.

Now what is great for modern karate practitioners, is that the Japanese influence on Okinawa was also infused into their native martial art. (Karate has even implemented Japanese judo uniforms and belt rankings) While Okinawan Karate is still mostly a striking art, Japan’s Samurai methods of jujutsu have become part of the standard Karate training curriculum. Thus almost making it a perfect martial art… except for one small detail.

Due to the fact that EVERY Karate technique is a complex motor movement (using multiple muscle groups), it would take 2 or 3 LIVES to be good enough at Karate to guarantee victory in stressful conditions of kill or be killed combat.

The perfect example of this takes us back to the TV show Human Weapon, as the climax of each episode is one of two hosts competing against a skilled practitioner of the art they’ve been studying throughout the show.

In the case of Karate, it was to participate in a Kumite (full contact fight, no safety gear, no punches to the face, head kicks allowed) against a second degree, 225 pound, Okinawan black belt champion. Let’s analyze this situation…

A karateka who has trained all his life against a not very flexible, but tough ex-football player, who had only been studying karate for a few days… They both have approximately the same weight… Fighting under the rules of karate… It should be a no-brainer, right? You’d think the karate guy would win easily.

WRONG.

Not only did the fight come to a standstill after a full time match, but the football player at one point in the fight managed to knock the karate guy down with a heavy punch. Trust me, the karate guy was one tough cookie (he shrugged off taking a punch to the jaw at one point), but how could a lifetime of training not beat someone just big, tough, and bad?

Because, as we found out earlier… Karate is simply a farmer’s method of conditioning himself to survive, not to win. When the occupying Samurai came to take the rice, cattle, or farmer’s daughter, Karate would definitely have helped to temporarily fend off the oppressor… but is that enough?

Is it alright that a large, poorly trained “tough guy” can go toe to toe with the so-called “Human Weapon” and get away unscathed? No, it’s not.

While I look forward to viewing the rest of the Human Weapon TV series from a professional and unbiased point of view, I have a distinct feeling that fans of every cultural fighting art featured will continue to defend and excuse their methods, even as the hosts of the programs hit them. . Too bad… Maybe they really would learn something useful.
