English Premier League 2010/11 – Who Will Be Relegated?

While the lucky few at the top of the Premier League table ponder title glory and European qualification, relegation is seen by most in the league as a more realistic if unwanted possibility. In this feature we take a look at the potential candidates and now tell you about the teams that will be relegated from the Premier League in May 2011.

At the start of the season, there was one man in the world, only one in six billion or so, who thought Blackpool would survive the rigors of a Premier League exam and last into a second (or perhaps third) season. That the man in question was mad made Ian Holloway’s belief seem even more out of place. Ian “rent-a-quote” Holloway, good for a laugh, did a decent job and was lucky last season… but Premier League survival? No way.

However, in the most unpredictable and downright insane Premier League season for years, we have Blackpool flying high in 10th with games left that could move them to 6th. Even more astonishing is the fact that they have only played eight of their 21 home games due to the cold winter and outdated facilities. Is this the most surprising of the season? Probably. But what about Newcastle sitting in ninth, Chelsea in fourth, Bolton battling their way to a Europa League place, Everton and Liverpool in the bottom half and last but not least Aston Villa in the bottom half? 17th place, outside the relegation zone by virtue of goal difference alone?

Oh yeah, this has been a fun year for the fun old game. The battle for relegation has been the same, close, unpredictable and impossible to summon. As it stands, the relegation places are taken by Wigan in 18th, then Wolves and West Ham propping up the league. However, with just 10 points separating the Hammers in last, and Bolton, who is seventh, anything could happen.

Ok, let’s take a look at the teams in trouble…

everpool – I’ll group these two average Mersey sides together and file them under ‘safe’. Everton have the upper hand in terms of personnel and a more stable setup off the pitch, but even Liverpool have too much to be in trouble. Don’t waste your money betting that any of these will be relegated from the Premier League in 2011.

Blackpool – You may be in the top half, you may have games available, you may have LOCAL games available, but not sure yet. As injuries and encounters pile up, the Tangerines could be caught in relegation danger. They have yet to play Manchester United and Spurs twice; no point of those four would put a different complexion on things.

black burn – Another struggling North West club that has points on the board but may struggle. The manager is unconvinced but will probably spend a few quid on the window to ensure security.

west brom – The Baggies started the season brightly. Six games in September and October saw them unbeaten, drawing with Spurs and Manchester United and beating Arsenal. They were scoring goals for fun and passing the ball around like a son of Arsenal and Brazil football. However, since November they have lost nine of 13 league games. Their next three home games are against Wigan, West Ham and Wolves and if they get the same result as they did against Blackpool, a win, in their last home game, they will be fine. Their home form is solid, so we say the Baggies will NOT be relegated this season.

fulham – Hughes is too good a manager and too determined for Fulham to leave. With Andy Johnson back on form and scoring, they will have enough quality, with Dempsey, Hangeland and the return of Bobby Zamora, to turn their string of draws into enough wins to avoid relegation.

birmingham city – One of the surprise teams from last season when they pulled off 1-0 wins like the Arsenal of yore, Birmingham have struggled this season. They have drawn far too many games like Fulham but, also like Fulham, their goal difference gives them an extra point over their relegation rivals and that, coupled with their solid defense, will keep them safe.

astonville – Signing Darren Bent for £18m shows his intentions. He’ll probably pick up another player or two in the window and with the experienced Houllier in the realm they’ll be fine.

Wigan – Sorry cake eaters, Wigan ARE going to be relegated from the Premier League. They have the least effective offense in the league, for all of Martinez’s passing ideals, and they have leaks behind. The team has lost key players in recent seasons and not replaced them and they don’t have the backbone, guts or heart to fight. In addition, they have all the big teams to play, as well as tough away games in Sunderland, West Brom and Stoke. The accessories say goodbye to Wigan.

Wolves – The only one of the three Ws at the bottom of the table with any hope of avoiding relegation from the Premier League. They have great ethics and team spirit and have been very unlucky in many games so far. With a bit of luck and key players such as striker Doyle returning to form, they have a decent chance.

west ham – Damned, damned, damned. We’ve been saying that for a while, and while it’s not the call of the century, we’ve held our ground despite its mini-renaissance. They are led by a man with the charisma of an ironing board and have only one player who looks ready for battle, Scott Parker. Piquionne recently missed a game to recover from a toothache in France and sums up the struggle in the team. Like Wigan, they have lost important players in the last two seasons – Dean Ashton, James Collins and Lee Bowyer for example – and have not replaced them, and also like Wigan, the props don’t look kind. West Ham, meet The Championship, TC, meet West Ham.

So who will be relegated from the Premier League?

Ok, yeah, it’s just two teams, West Ham and Wigan, that we’ve said will definitely be relegated. Last place will be whittled down to the bottom and I wouldn’t be surprised to see three or even four teams in the mix on the final weekend of the season. Wolves, Blackpool, Blackburn and West Brom look the most vulnerable, but in this crazy year, maybe Liverpool or one of the other ‘big’ clubs will surprise us. We’re going to be cheeky and save the third team for later in the season, so for now, the teams that will be relegated from the Premier League are West Ham and Wigan.
