Quarterback Coaching and QB Training

I am a former NFL quarterback who played for the Buffalo Bills and today I want to talk about quarterback training. Specifically about football-related Quarterback Speed.

I recently spoke with my good friend and former Northern Michigan University roommate Steve Mariucci. He was one of the NFL Network commentators commenting on how fast or slow quarterbacks were at the NFL Combine.

He said qb speed isn’t as important at the NFL level as it is in high school and college. He said what’s important for quarterbacks is the ability to have enough speed and quickness to move in the pocket and, if necessary, make a linebacker or defensive lineman miss you on a pass rush!

In the NFL, with the amount of money quarterbacks are being paid, Matt Ryan, a rookie, made over $50 million in 2008, you can’t have your quarterback running the extended offense and running back! the ball! Yes, you should pull shotgun, but there isn’t any owner in the NFL who wants to start qb by running the spread option like Tim Tebow.

If you look at the quarterback list below, you’ll notice that the top four quarterbacks to be selected in the upcoming 2009 NFL football draft Stafford, Sanchez, Freeman and Davis, none of them have incredible speed! But they can all make defensive players miss and move in the pocket!

Fastest Quarterback:

  1. West Virginia’s Pat White 4.5
  2. Steven McGee of Texas A&M 4.58
  3. Mike Reiley of Central Washington 4.71
  4. Rhett Bomar of Sam Houston State 4.72
  5. Matthew Stafford of Georgia 4.81
  6. Alabama’s John Parker Wilson 4.85
  7. USC’s Mark Sanchez 4.88
  8. Ball State’s Nate Davis 4.93
  9. Josh Freeman from Kansas State 4.95
  10. Chase Holebrook from New Mexico State 5.05
